Welcome To The New Discussion Forum!

The next generation of the discussion forum is now up and running. Our Discussion Forum and the Classifieds are now referred to as Groups. You can view either group, without being a member of the group, but to Post, you must Join the group.

TIP #1: If you see the "Join" button, just click that to join the group. There are no questions to answer, just a single click. If you do not see the Join button, then you are already a member of the group. We were able to add some club members to the Groups, but that process was bumpy.

TIP #2: When on one of Group pages, the typical menu, along the top, is not displayed. In the upper left corner, you should see something like: "Home > Groups > General Discussion". Just click "Home" and you will return to the CCCC Home page, with our norma…

410 auto pilot bypass

My 1973 410 has two helms and auto pilot. Right now I am having the lower helm rebuilt due to a fluid leak. I am also having the rudder cylinder being rebuilt for another reason. The reason is the boat wants to wander off left of course requiring me to steer back right often. I am hoping it was a leak internally on the rudder cylinder causing that.

There is a possibility the auto pilot has a problem causing the steering course correction. I don't use auto pilot so if needed I can remove/bypass it. I could also replace/rebuild the bypass valves in it. I am not clear on how the auto pilot is plumbed in. The rudder cylinder has four hose connections, not two. I assume the upper and lower helm comprise these four connections. That leave the question how is the auto pilot connected and how to bypass…

427 advice

Hello,

I had some luck with a partial rebuild I did a couple years ago on the starboard engine. I replaced one bad piston (right rear) that got pitted/corroded from water entering in from a plugged riser most likely. The engine was frozen when I took it over 6 years ago ('72 410 Commander). Long story short, I've only put in around 50 hours since finishing the rebuild. I had the heads machined, a couple of bent valves replaced, new pushrods, the intake boiled out, and the risers changed. The engine seemed to run fairly well but it has lower oil pressure at idle after it warms. 65 lbs when started, but then drops down to the first mark on the original gauge (assuming the gauge is accurate). I've was in denial of course and just tried to keep more RPMs on it. I don't run the boat as much…

Captain Jeff ... Thanks for the feedback but "specific answers" are still needed . Did you adjust ALL valves on the suspect engine or just # 1 & the low compression cylinder ? While you have the valve covers off do a complete cold valve lash on all the valves . A good source for your 427 engines on your side of town is www.harpursmarine.com . They know the Chris Craft 427 very well . Keep us posted . If you still have the factory installed under hull trim tabs I will send you info with pics on a simple modification that will improve all around performance .

Cutlass bearing replacement

My boat’s out of the water for a bit. Bottom paint being the main reason. While under there, I found the props very difficult to spin. Zincs were totally gone. Any tips for bearing replacement? 1-1/4 shafts. Thanks!

I’m not removing struts. So far, I’ve only got the prop nuts off. Props are going to be tough. Tomorrow I’ll see about disconnecting the shafts at the transmission end.
