Water tank plumbing

Hi all, recently replaced the original 50 gal galvanized water tank with a plastic tank. The problem is that I can only fill a few gallons before the fill hose “backs up”. Then I have to wait, and repeat. The old tank did not have a vent. Do plastic tanks require a vent? Where would you suggest I vent it to?

Thanks for your thoughts.

My bayliner the vent comes out about 2 inches down the back of the boat that way I guess when its full it just runs out into the lake.... i ment to say on the temp vent hose to get a new line... that way now fuel will be in the tank.... i may have to be replacing mine... ill have to remove the genset to pull it...maybe.... anyway... safe boating
