Water tank plumbing

Hi all, recently replaced the original 50 gal galvanized water tank with a plastic tank. The problem is that I can only fill a few gallons before the fill hose “backs up”. Then I have to wait, and repeat. The old tank did not have a vent. Do plastic tanks require a vent? Where would you suggest I vent it to?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks John.

Fuel Tanks

I have a 1970 Commander with aft cabin and have been told that the fuel tanks (should) be replaced given the age of the boat.

The boat has never been in salt water and has only been used 15-20 hrs a year for the past 40 years.

Would anyone have comments on such a statement...?

Would anyone have experience with such a replacement...?

Many thanks for your comments

Before jumping to any conclusions, a very carefull inspection of both inside and outsides of your tanks would tell you what you need to know.

On the outsides:

Is there any rust or corrosion? Pay very close attention the areas that rest on the tank's supports. Over the years moisture in between points of contact can cause degradation.

Inspect your tie down straps and or brackets too.

Inside the tanks: You can send a camera in there to look for rust, debris, and the condition of the original galvinizing.

If they check out , no need to replace them just yet. If they are rusting or their galvinizing is flaking off (often looks like light colored powder or flakes) its probably not a bad idea to replace them .

If their galvinizing is respectable but there's a bunch of sediment, you can attempt to clean them out , but keep in mind that it will be nearly impossible to get past the baffles to do a through clean out.

If its in fact determined that you do end up needing to pull the tanks, dont waste time and money trying to refurbish the original ones. Brand new tanks are always a better plan vs. Cleaning, lining , reinstalling old tanks.

Fuel tank pick ups

Does anyone have a diagram of the fuel pick ups in my 1967 31’ commander two fuel tanks ? I’ve looked through the site and haven’t been successful finding anything- thank you - JFK

I dont have a diagram to share , but the pickups are pretty simple however not the easiest to access.

They are on the top of the tanks and often will have a brass shut off valve attached .

From there they go to a simple manafold likely centered between the tanks that allow you to draw fuel in the normal position ( port tank supplying port eng. and stbd tank supplying stbd eng)

Or if needed. Both or one engine(s) to run from one or the other tank.

Are you having a specific problem with your fuel system?
