Hello All Commander lovers. We are celebrating our 25th year in August and it is an excellent way to see lots of beautiful boats and hang out with Commander lovers. The Rendezvous will be held in Huron Ohio situated on Lake Erie August 8-10. Huron is only several miles from Sandusky which is home to the fabulous Cedar Point amusement park. If you can get there by boat, Sign up and get your dock. We are welcoming all Chris Craft products so if your beloved Chris is on a trailer, load her up and display her with the trailer boats in the area set aside for display on land. What if your boat just cant make it to Huron? ROAD TRIP! Load up the car and come join us anyway. Coming to a Rendezvous without your boat can be an entirely new experience. Suzanne and I have done it several times and had a lot of fun. Your not tied to being onboard so you can spend more time looking at others and meeting other CCCC members. Here is a link to the event: https://www.commanderclub.com/forum/general-discussion/2025-national-rendezvous-august-8-10 Come join us. I promise you will enjoy it. If you are coming, please send me a photo of your boat. We will proudly display all attending members boats on a display easel with your info. Hope to see you there. Sterling

Recently I embarked on a rather mundane bit of maintenance. Many will argue on the timing of this ritual but I choose every 2 years. I have found over the years that following this timeline has never given me a failure or even the hint of impeller breakdown. I always inspect all the parts and every other rebuild I mic the wear plate to be sure it is still thick enough. Here is a photo of all the pieces parts. You may be wondering why I tore it all the way down? Well it all looked good until I saw this: Look at the wear on the end plate bushing. It is quite uneven. That led me to check the play in the main bearing. Bingo, wobble city. So out it all came. The culprit seems to be a failed bearing and upon closer inspection i found a spring clip on the seal completely disintegrated. While my impellers looked very good, these other issues would have spelled disaster in the future. That worn bearing would have wiped out the cover and or the housing. So to my headline, Have you looked at your pumps lately???? Cheers, boating season is coming, trust me!
Do you know what your raw water pumps are doing?

Recently a real bummer occurred on My Other Honey. The dreaded/loved railing hinge broke. These are the stainless steel railings that surround many of our crafts. This is not the hinge that connects to a mahogany railing. Just to be clear. This is an ingenious design that allows the railing to fold back on itself and secure to the railing with a snap. Here is a photo of how it works. There are two failure points. The brass part you see that bridges the two railings and the brass part that goes into the tube. The brass piece snaps in half and or the tube end breaks off one of the ears. You can see above that both pieces had failed on ours. I did not shoot any photos of the tube end repair. You can see that I repaired the ear by using a piece of a washer. Then drilled the brass part that was remaining and used a 6/32 machine screw to anchor the washer piece in place. When I was happy with fit, I used a little JB weld to anchor every thing. If you look closely, you can see the threads in the brass where the tap got too close to the surface. OOps. Next was the broken part. I ordered a piece of 1/4 inch brass flat stock for fabrication. ( Evil Bay- 14.99 delivered) I then made a pattern from the broken piece and started to cut out a rough blank. I used my band saw to do the rough trimming and then a grinder and flat file for final shaping. The end result is seen below. New vs Old with the pins installed. I decided to use the old pins which are brass since they showed very little wear. All put back in place and ready to take to the boat for final install. I am by NO means a machinist and I am sure there are a million ways to do this better. In the end, I had the enjoyment of repairing a broken part and the satisfaction of getting it done. Cheers to all and show us your projects. BIG and small. Scott
