Cleaning the gas tanks
I have been trying to clean the 15 years of sludge from the bottoms of my tanks by pulling the bottom quart of gas out of the tank and then replacing the filters after 1-2 hours for running the boat around. I seem to have quite a bit still left. On my 1964 - 38' there were 2 circular deck plates. Did those sit right above of the fuel intact lines? If yes, is there a way to open up the top of the tank to have access to clean them? My circular deck plates were removed and glassed over when the previous owner repowered the boat.
Thanks,
Steve

My 1968 31 Commander has the original round steel 50 gallon tanks. When I aquired the boat 4 years ago I found the fuel filters just packed with red sludge( rust). The fill hoses went straight down to the tanks so…. I rigged up a fuel hose with a cartridge filter (see thru) and an electric fuel pump. I triple filtered fuel striring up the tank bottom the best I could. I have never had an issue with fuel since. I keep my tanks 3/4 or more full and renewed the gaskets on my fill line caps to reduce condensation in my tanks. I also use fuel preservative. Good luck
