1982 Commander - losing power at 2k RPM
It's been some time since I've posted here; prior to this season, I did my best to replace what I could on my engines in hopes it would only improve performance; I had the carbs rebuilt, cap, rotors, wires, impellers, new gaskets in sea strainers ect; at the end of last season, right before pulling out; I would go to accelerate the starboard engine and it would bog down at 1,800 to 2k rpm; I thought it might be the fuel pump; replaced it with what I think was the right one per the marine parts store, proper flange and 454 specific; DID NOT resolve the issue and eventually had to pull boat for season; had carbs rebuild over winter thinking that could be issue and went ahead and did the caps, rotor, plugs and wires; also replaced the choke springs.
Fast forward; took boat out for first time the other day, and same ISSUE on starboard engine; timed engines at 8 degrees BTDC with a digital timing light with RPM; notice the timing gage on the starboard engine had all the same size teeth; set to 8 degrees which is a few notches in from the left in looking from rear; I believe this is a reverse rotation side and maybe something is off on my timing and it is dropping power when under load?
I have a call into mechanic at Harpers Marine in CA that has been very helpful trying to sort out what is going on; I have been told that it could be a fuel issue by people at the dock; looking for any insight if anyone has been down this road; thanks for your time - Greg
