What would you do?
I'm looking to buff a 56-year-old gel coat.
The gel coat is in remarkably good shape but definitely has lost its shine.
Its looks nice and dark when its wet and has not worn through on any corners. What compounds and pads would you all recommend? I am figuring to start on the less aggressive side and up the ante so to speak if needed. Any specific brand, parts, pads etc, recommendations are sought.
Also, what are your important lessons learned especially from errors.

I wish you the best with your project! Oh. One additional note of caution, try to avoid direct sunlight during the process. Cloudy days are wonderful!
I once picked up a Brown and beige 281 Catalina. The hull buffed up nicely. The brown boot stripe and the hull stripe were factory painted and could not be saved. The cabin stripes were vinyl tape. (These are photos of old photos from the early 90s).
My solution was to remove the stripe tape. Then I brush painted the cabin top from the rub rail up with Interlux Hatteras Off White Enamel. I repainted the hull and boot stripe stripes in Turquoise with gold trim. Plus, turquoise bottom paint. I added a turquoise canvass top. Dr Vinyl repaired the upholstery rips very inexpensively.
When finished, it looked like a much newer model, and no one ever noticed the beige hull. There are so many things you can do. Feel free to get creative.
