Damage assessment

Hello all, seeking input in regard to damage we’ve incurred from the dock of the marina where we’re birthed for the summer; we’ve had a pretty bad storm and despite extra lines and bumpers, a barrier over a metal fitting on the dock failed and has done some pretty good damage to the gelcoat. This is a new slip for us; we only tied up there last week and hadn’t had time to install permanent bumpers. At the risk of inviting a fair amount of criticism regarding not being more proactive about taking steps to protect the hull, I’m hoping to share pics and get some input.

My question is whether there’s enough damage here that it’s worth just filing a claim with insurance? I haven’t seen the boat myself yet so I can only go based on the pictures but I’m inclined toward an insurance claim ( deductible is $500) while my husband is feeling it’s a simple paint job that we can repair ourselves. I’d would love to get input as to what others would recommend? I’m fairly anxious that we get a repair done right and know we’re no experts when it comes to something like this. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

As Jeremy and Paul have stated thats considerable damage while possibly not structural. I would certainly notify your agent and leave the door open to file a claim. Then after you get reliable quotes you can do a cost analysis and decide the best course of action. (Financially) Not fixing it is NOT an option. Not only because of cosmetics but I see raw glass that moisture will penetrate and make issues worse. Good Luck and hope you have a good quality Insurance Carrier
