My 35 Salon was repowered by the PO in 2000 using Crusader 7.4 MPIs (320 hp version) and connected to Velvet Drive 5000 series transmissions. The same 1-3/8" shafts were used because the Crusader's max torque is lower than the original Chris Craft engines, at ~410 ft lbs vs ~430 ft lbs. respectively.
New engine beds were required. And because my Crusader's were fuel injected, fuel tank return lines were needed. This, in turn, made it necessary to illuminate the original fuel tank cross feed system.
Due to the unique design of the 35 Salon (w/hardtop), my engines were partially disassembled to fit them through the cockpit doors, and then reassembled in situ.

The old 427s made it to 1800 hours.
