Looking at a 1971 31' Sports Express estate sale. Does this model have wood cored stringers? If so, what are problems/issues with cored stringers.
Does a flat yellow distributor cap indicate an upgrade to electronic?

Commanders had hollow fiberglass stingers other than the tops where the engines were bolted. I would be surprised to find anything else. The explanation of the distributer was correct. If you have room it could be replaced. The crab caps are prone to failure.
