Looking for a starter for port 454 engine. Boat is 1973 36’ tournament fish, I don’t think these are the original engines. (correction, these are the original marine power engines)
I will take the old starter and have it rebuilt but also wanted to order one delivered and quickly get back up and running.
NOBODY seems to have this starter, it’s discontinued by Arco. Did they replace this model with another one? It can’t be this hard to find a starter for a 454? Right?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank u, Whitney

Wow. I talked to Arco and this starter is discontinued, apparantly i have the original Chris-Craft bell housing and this 3 bolt configuration was special for that. Looks like i'll be getting my rebuilt after all. Unless you all know something I dont? Its always so funny when these guys say things like "way back in the 70s..."
Call Ward Marine in Winthrop Mass. they had one last week.
Those are the original engines. They were Marine Power 454. Marine power was the provider in the mid 70s and later. I bought the starboard engine starter from Ward (for a diff boat) and he said they had the other in stock as well. Good luck
@Lee Dahlen Spoke with Jeromy at Ward, they have a clockwise rotation but they dont have the CCW, he's going to call his supplier as well.
wild goose chase: found an old manual for the Marine Power 454 and it lists this starter as a part number: 0171-000 (lists it as top mount 14" flywheel reverse rotation) I really dont know what "top mount" means, i don't the the size of my flywheel and I'm not sure "reverse rotation" means CCW... but this seems to be the part number before arco...
Found one!!! French Creek Marina in Clayton NY (almost in Canada) has a warehouse full of starters, he didn't seem phased by my request. It took me a minute to believe him, but they had the starter and they are shipping it to me!
Hmm wonder if they have a pair for my 1972 350 Q engines in my 31
Just wondering... you mentioned top mount... my crusader 454.... Don know if that is another word for marine brand... but anyway... I have a cc 336 with twin crusader 454... and their starters are on top of my engines.... when I bought this boat that was the first time I've ever seen crusader engines.... and wow... are they hugh... not much room in there after add all the items... genset.... and tanks...but didn't know if that was what they have ment.... as top mount
454 chebys (I know I spelled it wrong). Have a low mount starter by design. You can not see them in a marine installation because of all the add on stuff. To simplify service, Mercury and Crusader had bell housings cast to mount starters up top on the bell housings. This got the starters out of the dark wet bowels of the bilge and made them accessible.
