I need to remove my riser and exhaust manafold to change out my starter on my port engine. Can anyone tell me if the coolant drains on the riser will drain enough of the coolant to remove the exhaust manifold? How much coolant can I expect? I assume the drain on the exhaust elbo will take care of the raw water….let me know if I am wrong .

John, Are you sure? I don't ever remember taking a man off to change a starter on a Q, but I could be wrong. I think I used extra long 3/8 extensions and a swivel socket. But again, I could be wrong. That being said: There are two drain plugs under the riser area. One directly under the riser drains raw water. The other is on the Man side of riser and will drain sufficient coolant to remove the Man. Expect about a gallon or less. Hope this helps you.
The starter can be removed with manifold in place on 74 350Q's
Thanks for the comments guys, to clarify, the issue is not removal of the starter but rather access room to get a wrench on it. On the early 31 Commander salon there is only 8” or so between the floor support and the exhaust manifold on the out board side of the port engine. I am told removal of the manifold will allow one to hang over the engine upside diwn and get to the bolts…. Not looking forward to standing on my head for ?????? Who knows how long. The good news is the engines were rebuilt 3 years ago.
Here are some pictures of the port access on the 31 Commander, in was able to get to the starter only after removing the port exhaust manifold
