Hi everyone! I have an engine problem and I’m trying to get some insight/ troubleshooting solutions before calling a mechanic. First off it is my port engine (DD 871N) on my Commander 55 (hull 1) and here is the background of the issue…

Last April, I connected the dock water at the marina and ran the engines and the next morning I woke up to find the boat listing and discovered I had a hose failure during the night and had a small flood right above a starter battery and had a short that affected the 32 volt starter that I could not remove due to bad back and recently had someone else remove and rebuild it. It seems to work fine under load but the just likes to may a clunk… come to find out that she is seized. There is no water in the oil or transmission. W…

Since that i start them every few months... haven't had the commander yet waiting for phyllis to retire... but it is setting on the trl in the boat shed.... almost ready to go.... once I see she will be water ready then will do the bottom paint the top is fine just buff it out and it will shine... but since it hadn't been moved while sitting in tampa bay the crustaceans did a number on the bottom... so it will need to be painted atleast... apart I sand it ill see if I have to sand down and reapply gel coat

Upper Niagara river

I was looking around my commander and found a map of the upper Niagara river from 6/13/81.. and it looks like one you would see under glass... It is rolled up and hid pretty good.... I have no use for it but if someone might want it that lived up in that area might like to have....it is bigger than what it showed i haven't unrolled it ... has a little water spots on the bottom ...

On the distributor you have 2 nuts 180 from each other on the outside. Loosen them but do not remove. The plate should lift out.

Rudder packing - first time

Greatings,

At the end of last summer, my port rudder packing began to leak at a pretty good rate. This would be my first time having to change the packing. I'm looking for any tips that might help with this process. Does anyone know the size for the packing? (1/8", 1/4", 3/8"...) I have found a few videos which have served to calm my nerves. However, I would greatly appreciate any advice toward getting a successful outcome. At the end of the season, I did attempt to loosen the castle nut...it didn't budge at all.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Sincerely,

David Schueckler

I recommend picking up 2 pairs of plier wrenches.

They were technically designed for plumbing with adjustable smooth jaws that dont mare chrome fittings.

I've found they do a wonderful job on packing nuts and are a much better quality tool than the adjustable packing wrenches all the marine suppliers sell.

Put one wrench on the packing nut and the other on the jamb nut . This works well when trying to free a packing nut that hasn't moved in a long while.
