My replacement starter is a little different than my Delco Remy. There is an S terminal and an R terminal and the positive post. I don’t think there was a wire to the R terminal on the Delco. (Blue paint on it) What is the R terminal used for?

Hi John. Wow. This question is a hornets nest. Ask five people and get five different answers. The S is the wire to the switch. The R. If used is for bypassing the resistor during cranking. Do you have a 337 Q wire diagram? I do not. We should look at that to see if you have one wire or two. If you have only one, use the S terminal. Just remember the R will be hot during cranking.
Ok John. I looked at the resources section and found a Q wiring diagram. The original had one terminal. There should be a tan 14 ga wire from the solenoid to the ignition switch. This would be the S terminal. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the answer on the R terminal. Makes sense why it is not used on my setup…. Electronic ignitions!
Leave it empty on the new starter. No problem

There is one other wire that went to the S terminal that is a mystery. I am trying to trace it but it is on the outboard side of my port engine. With mirrors and my multimeter I will try to see where it goes but I know of no reason to have anything feeding off the start terminal? It would have intermittant 12v when kicking the starter. I have Mallory electronic coils with the required resistors and acretro fit Baldor alternator … going thru old boats others have monkeyed with is so frustrating.
Can you see a color
I will take a picture of thecwire and where it goes to
Ok I have a tan wire and a black wire. I zip tied them together when I took them off but it is confusing. I get 12v on the tan wire when the key is turned to start. I get an ohm reading to ground on the. Black wire but it disapears in a bundle of wires. I will check my starboard engine to see if I can find a reasonable answer!
